Eagle Rock Entertainment, the distributor of "Blood Ties," the vamp crime show that got lost on Lifetime, gave me the dvds of Season One. After hearing all the fan raves about this series, I expected to like it and I did very much.
I expected to like: Christina Cox as the difficult, dogged Vicki Nelson, who will throw herself into danger to save others; Kyle Schmidt as hawt vampire Henry Fitzroy; the Toronto setting; the supernatural crime element; and the occasional humor.
But I was really suprised by a few things, including how damn likeable and engaging Dylan Neal is as the copy Mike Celluci, the third part of the crime fighting team. He has such a square-jawed, blown-dried look that I thought the character would be an uptight, by-the-books hardass. But Neal plays Celluci as a good guy whose able to adapt to the fact that his ex-girlfriend has partnered with a vampire. He's also got a nicely dry delivery of funny lines.
I loved many of the secondary characters and extras on the series. My favorite is Nimet Kanji as Dr. Rajani Mohadevan, who's surprised by absolutely nothing. Vampires, ghosts, monsters -- it's all in a day's work.
THE CONTEST:
To win my copy of "Blood Ties: Season One," just leave a comment telling me if there was a television series or book series that you thought got cancelled too soon. I'm pretty disappointed that "Blood Ties" didn't make it to year three, but other great shows, like "The X-Files," dragged on well-past their expiration date.
The contest runs through Wednesday night, July 15, and a winner will be pulled at random. You can comment if you're not in the U.S. or Canada, a winner must be in the U.S. or Canada.

OTHER STUFF
Have you heard about "Warehouse 13," coming out on the SciFy channel? You can read an interview with its star. "Eddie McClintock was ready for his role on 'Warehouse 13.' In the new dramedy, premiering tonight at 9 on Syfy, the actor plays Pete Lattimer, a Secret Service agent assigned to protect a warehouse full of fantastical objects and investigate supernatural occurrences." (Boston Herald)The reviews for tonight's premiere are good, including this one from the Los Angeles Times. "'The X-Files' meets 'Fringe' by way of 'The Librarian' with a little 'Indiana Jones' and maybe even 'Bones' thrown in for good measure, 'Warehouse 13' is unapologetically and delightfully derivative, happily plucking the best stuff from our favorite shows and leaving all the heaviness behind. In this loud and angry world of post-mythology and damaged heroes, how nice to see a television show satisfied with being simply entertaining."
Derek Tatum discusses a series that was not cut off too soon, the long-running, cult favorite, "Dark Shadows." "But my favorite Dark Shadows story by far involves one of my elderly relatives (who died before I was born) was going progressively blind. In order to 'save her eyesight up' so she could watch the show, she would shut her eyes until the program started. That, my friends, is dedication." (Mondo Vampire)Beth Fantasky, the author of the teen novel, Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side, is giving away two prize packages on her blog, including signed copies of her book. "Once again, I was going to have you actually DO something to win - and once again, I changed my mind, thinking, "Summer is supposed to be LAZY. We should all just be reading by the pool!"
Okay, my dogs are whining because they want to go out to the park. I'll try to add a Gratuitous Video of the Day later.

Both Moonlight and the Dresden files disappeared much to my sadness. I'm still holding out a hope for Chuck to be back next fall.
Looking forward to Warehouse 13, it looks fun.
And I have two shows that were pulled too early.....Farscape and Angel.
Definitely the Dresden Files! After only one season! And it had such good potential.
Still not happy about that.
Hi, Vic, "Moonlight" and "New Amsterdam" got yanked before they had a chance to develop an audience or develop the series.
Joder, while I was bummed about "Angel," I've been glad that David Boreanaz found a series that really used his comedic skills.
I just remembered "Firefly," which had so much potential and got destroyed by Fox, which is why I don't trust them with "Dollhouse."
Hi Marta!
I loved Moonlight, Roswell - Roswell is a group of young aliens, YA tv? Anyway, I enjoyed it. I liked the Dresden Files as well, but it really stepped away from the books, Hulu replays the series and I get my fix there. I was crushed when Buffy died and Angel left. X-files should have left off many seasons before and I can't even bring myself to watch the movies.
I waiting for Warehouse 13 to get going, I love Eureka on the SciFi channel, it runs during the summers.
Dottie :)
the Dresden files would be my pick
Firefly, Dresden Files and My Own Worst Enemy all were way too short!
Firefly and the Dresden files!
Yeah, sad about the X-Files. *sigh* That last season was totally "WHY?"
The Dresden Files is my pick for a show cut off too early. I adore this series.
I'm interested in Warehouse 13, but I have class on Tuesday nights!
Veronica Mars ended way too soon.
I might have to check out Warehouse 13. Sounds interesting.
Firefly, or course.
Bionic Woman, I think, too. The first few episodes were epic awful because of all the backstory they wanted to shove into them. But just before the writer's strike, the character's got into their groove a bit.
Firefly (anyone who doesn't say Firefly is being blasphemous).
In a more recent sense, The Unusuals from ABC, I was sad to hear that got canned before even the fifth episode aired. Its quirky--maybe not the perfect show, but by the end of the very short season (10 episodes) it had hit a good stride with the cast managing to come off as something other then the stereotype they were supposed to be.
Oh and Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles. Way to leave us with the second season ending >.>
I also second Roswell, but I'm not entirely certain how good they could have made it since by the end of the third (and last) season it was...a mess.
"Veronica Mars" and "Life" were canceled too soon. Those were great shows.
Watching my BT DVDs as we speak (and it's certainly the cancellation that still stings the most!), so please don't put my name in the hat, but I have to put in another vote for Dresden Files. On which, incidentally, Joanne Kelly (Warehouse 13's leading lady) guested twice as vampire madam Bianca.
On the book end, I don't begrudge Misty Lackey the right to move on to other projects, but I still wish we'd gotten those last two Diana Tregarde books after she tantalized us with titles!
Those above have mentioned most of the shows I thought were pulled too soon. Moonlight, The Dresden Files, Firefly, Blood Ties. A couple not yet mentioned that I really liked were Kindred: The Embraced and Brimstone.
I'm going to go with Roswell (loved this show) and Moonlight.
Oh, so many shows, but I'll go with "Alien Nation" (one of my all-time favorites and only got one season) and "Moonlight."
Moonlight was given a good enough chance on tv. I think they canceled it too soon and are probably kicking themselves now, what with the success of little movies like Twilight and that other little vampire show on cable, True Blood.
Margay
I was really dissappointed when Angel was over enjoyed that one!
I liked "Angel," too, although I started watching it late.
I think one season is enough for a bad series, but not enough for a good one. If something seems to have promise, a network should hold on longer. Many hit shows had unsuccessful first seasons, while the writers, directors, and actors were working out the characters and storyline -- or before an audience had discovered the series.
I'd love to be entered. I really liked Moonlight, so I'm sad that ended. I blame the writer's strike...they should have brought it back. Sigh.
The Class only lasted one season too and that show was a lot of fun. I miss it.
-Lauren
Sometimes it seems like I should be asking "What show did I like that wasn't cancelled too soon?"---Firefly, Wonderfalls, Pushing Daisies were all favorites of mine that were taken too soon. What I'm really lamenting right now, though, is the show "The Middleman," a terrific sci-fi/superhero spoof that was on the Family channel (wrong network, I believe). It was just awesome, IMO, but very few people have even heard of it!
You know, there are sooo many TV series out there that have been canceled and I remember being upset about it. Unfortunately when I need to remember what they were, I'm at a complete loss. I loved Moonlight and The Dresden Files, like everyone else but the SciFi channel airs some shows that I like, but don't remember them when they were originally out, such as Special Unit 2 and Jake 2.0 somehow I must have missed them. Count me in the contest please!
The Dresden Files ended too soon. I would have loved to see it continue.

At the risk of repeating others, New Amsterdam was cancelled way too soon, that show had so much potential, ditto with Moonlight. The real loss was Pushing Daisies, man I am going to miss it something awful.
PLease sign me in for the contest =) I haven't heard from the series before but it does sound great.
About series being stopped to soon, I would have to say I was disapointed to not see a dark angel season 3. I love Jessica Alba and Jensen Ackles so much hehe.
Thank for the nice contest!

Dylan Neal was terrific. I had the exact same reaction as you did when I first saw him, but he actually made me like Celluci more than I ever had. Excellent casting. And he came off like a genuinely likable guy on the Making Of featurette as well.
I really liked BBC's Hex & moonlight, both were to shortlived for me. I had not heard about Warehouse 13 , I will be watching it tonight Thanks.
I mourn the loss of the Dresden files as well as Firefly, seems I am in good company
Moonlight
I think that Blood Ties and Dresden Files were both cancelled too soon.
Most of my favorites have already been mentioned: Firefly, Dark Angel, Veronica Mars, Terminator: SCC, Dresden Files, Blood Ties, My Own Worst Enemy, Roswell and Wonderfalls. The only other one I can think of is Reunion. I really wanted to know how that one ended.
Just watched Warehouse 13. Loved it! :0)
Thanks!

I was a fan of Joan of ARcadia, it was on for 2 seasons, i thought it was unique.
Moonlight and New Amsterdam. I enjoyed both of those shows.
Moonlight is the top of my list for canceled too soon. It was campy but we looked forward to it every Friday night!

Blood Ties went down far before its time, but I will never forgive Fox for cancelling Firefly.
While I am sad that Moonlight disappeared too early and Chuck is still kind of iffy, there were a couple of shows from the late 1980's that I really liked that weren't given a fair chance.
Probe starring Parker Stevenson was a quirky little show that barely lasted half a season.
Guns of Paradise (just Paradise in season 2) starring the gorgeous Lee Horsley was the only Western show I ever liked and it was yanked too soon it its second season.
It makes you wonder if these shows were just aired at the wrong time.
I wihs Moonlight would have lasted more than one season. I am one of the few that LOVED that show!
Amy J
It seems like I just get into a show and it gets cancelled! New Amsterdam, Valentine, and Life are the most recent shows I really enjoyed that got cancelled way too soon. Life got 2 seasons and New Amsterdam was at least a full season, but Valentine was cancelled after 4 episodes! At least they are showing the last few unaired episodes this summer so I can still see it.
please enter me into the contest...
we only get basic cable and i haven't even watched most of the shows listed so far in the comments... i do however remember dark angel as someone else stated earlier and i also liked that show. i completely forgot about it. i'm not a huge tv bug, so it's really hard for me to answer this question.
thanks for the chance to win!
tina
Firefly definitely! As for the Dresden Files, I didn't even know they were on until after they got cancelled (grr @ Canada's Space Channel, but also yeah to SC because they did replay it for a while so I could catch up).
The first show I can really remember that go cancelled long before it should have was SportsNight. I have a set of the DVDs and still watch them over and over again. As far as I am concerned Felicity Huffman isn't a desparate housewife, she'll always be Dana Whitaker to me. Ditto to Peter Krause (Casey McCall).
Me again... another show that I was really upset about getting cancelled was Cupid. Not the crap re-make with Bobby Cannavale, the original one with Jeremy Piven. That one rocked. Wish it would be released on DVD.
Just finished watching Moonlight (never saw the show but got the DVDs) and I agree that it went too soon.
I'm always the fan of tv shows that get canceled too soon! I loved Roswell, Pushing Daisies, Angel, Invasion, Jericho, Freakylinks, Moonlight, Joan of Arcadia, and New Amsterdam.
The one series that was absolutely cancelled way to soon was MOONLIGHT!!!!!!!!! I will agree that some of the early episodes had were not the best. But the series was just finding it's stride and was ready tu run. So many questions were left unanswered. I would give anything to see more MOONLIGHT...Series or MOVIE!!!!!!!!
I watched Warehouse 13 last night and it wasnt as captivating as I expected. I will see if next weeks episode is better. Television series that I wished could have gone on would be John Doe, Moonlight, Angel and Dresden Files.

There are so many great shows that were just canceled at least 5 seasons too soon; I really liked Tarzan, Bionic Woman, and Moonlight. And of course, Blood Ties :(
I'd have to say the 4400.
rsgrandinetti(at)yahoo(dot)com
Renee, I was really bummed when "The 4400" wasn't renewed - it just left us hanging.
Heather, I felt "Joan of Arcadia" was a really interesting series with a great cast. I also wish "Dead Like Me" and "The Middlemen" had another chance.
Hi Marta!
I love your books and just discovered this blog!! Totally Awesomeness!
I LOVE Henry! He is so sexy and the dynamics between him and Vicki just kept you on the edge of your seat! I can't remember the secretary to Vicki but she was really a cool character too and loved her clothes!
**So my pick is :Blood Ties hands down, I was p o'd when they ended it without ending it!!! Here I am crying my eyes out and then that's it! That's it****** Then to top it off you could only see the final show on line when it first happened!!!
So many of the Vampire, paranormal shows get cancelled before there time. I don't get it I mean there are hundreds, thousands of us watching the show! We even had petitions to get it back on the air.Apparently the ratings people don't care!
Sorry to rant, Great Blog topic Marta!
Thanks!
Shows I loved that got cancelled: Dresden Files and Moonlight. They barely got through one season. Oh, and my recent Pushing Daisies. The fact that I won't be able to get my Emerson Cod fix is sad. I pray they really do the movie of it.
The Television series that I felt got cancelled too soon was The Dresden Files and the book series that got cancelled too soon was the Tuonela series by Anne Frasier.
I enjoyed both of them very much and it still depresses me to know that they're gone. >.<
You are all going to think I am a big dork - I totally LOVED Kindred the Embraced. I was so bummed that they didn't continue with that one.
You're not a dork Jen. I loved that show too and it was super sad that Mark Frankel died since I beleive it was going to be renewed before he passed away.
Thanks, Chris J.! I'll be finishing up the fourth Casa Dracula book when I fine tune my next novel.
Jen, lots of Kindred fans voted for the Mark Frankel in my Ultimate Hawt Vampire Contest. I can't believe I hadn't heard of Kindred before.
Shell, I expected to like "Pushing Daisies" because I liked the show's creator, but it was too cute by half. At least for me.
Michele Hauf is donating her copy of "The Dresden Files" DVD for a contest next week!
Definitely Moonlight. I was so hooked on that show and couldn't believe they didn't renew it. wahhhhhh!
Freaks and Geeks ended too soon.
throuthehaze at gmail dot com
Moonlight was canceled too soon. I really liked that show.
lovinfitch(at)aol(dot)com
I watched every episode of Moonlight, not happy it was cancelled after one season!
delilah0180(at)yahoo(dot)com
Without a doubt the series that canceled way before its time was Blood Ties. There were so many stories left untold about Henry's past, not only his ex-lovers but how many periods of history and different locations he may have lived through. We never were able to have his relationship with the doctor at the college explained to us. We never got to see who Vicki ultimately would have ended up with, although I read the books and I would much rather have seen her end up with Henry.
The biggest reason this show disappeared too soon was lifetime. As others have mentioned we wrote postcards, letters, we wrote to lifetime and other networks, we ran an ad in Variety Online but to no avail. Lifetime was like a jealous lover, she didn't want Blood Ties but she didn't want anyone else to have it either. She held onto it so long that I would imagine it made it virtually impossible for the production companies to sell it to another network.
There has never been a cast with as much chemistry as this cast had-Dylan, Christina, Kyle and Gina were all perfect together. For a young actor all of 22 years old when he started filming the show Kyle managed to make us all believe he was a 450 year old vampire. He played Henry Fitzroy with just enough arrogance and aristocracy to make us believe he was the bastard son of Henry V
III. Henry wore his heart on his sleeve, he became a vampire to be near the woman he loved, he wanted to be with her forever, now how many women wouldn't find that romantic? The last episode between Henry and Vicki literally broke your heart if you were a regular viewer as you knew Henry wanted Vicki and Vicki just couldn't totally say goodbye to Mike.
There were so many things left unsaid, not explained, too many loose ends. And looking back in retrospect with the current vamp rage as it is I hope lifetime is kicking their own butts. IDIOTS!!!
Marta:
Posted the link about the contest and told them the closing date over at KSC (Kyle Schmid Central). Wish I'd know about it sooner, would have spread the news quicker.
Hi, everyone!
Thanks, MaggieMay, and I can guess what series KS fans will think was canceled to soon. I expected to like Kyle on the series, but Dylan Neil was the real surprise. I thought he was terrific and very believable and sympathetic as the cop who's trying to keep Vicki out of danger, but respects her skill.
Well, of course Firefly is enshrined in my memory, but I also want to mention a book series, Cherie Priest's Eden Moore books. It's three books about this woman who sees ghosts, very Southern gothic, but the publisher isn't picking up more because they didn't sell well. (sniff)
I can think of two off the top of my head. The first was Alien Nation. I enjoyed the concepts presented and thought Gary Graham and Eric Pierpoint did a great job of picking up where James Caan and Mandy Patinkin left off. Would have been nice to see more.
The second show ended after 13 episodes, the Babylon 5 sequel Crusade. It got off to a rough start, but I thought the story showed a lot of potential.
Sportsnight ... won plenty of awards, had plenty of fans (women and men alike!), but didn't get past season 2.
I just got into Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and now it is gone. I'm sad.
I also wouldn't mind a few more of Wen Spencer's Ukiah series, but I don't think she is going to oblige.
Three shows that ended to soon,
Brimstone, Strange Luck & Space: Above & Beyond.
Don't count me in for the contest, since I live outside the US and Canada, but... I have to admit, I really wanted to see a third season of "Popular".
Space: Above & Beyond was also cancelled right when it was getting more interesting.
Let's see...Blood Ties, Moonlight, Tru Calling and Life on Mars top my list. I'm sure there are others, but these are the first four I can think of.

Hope you don't mind me posting this hear but I know your fans would probably like to weigh in on this-TV.com is having a poll as to the Greatest Vampire Show of all times, of course they didn't include Blood Ties but hey that doesn't mean we won't make noise about it. I realize this is like being a Salmon swimming upstream to spawn but if we can't get the show back the least we can do is try to win some bragging rights. Yes, they left out Blood Ties and others. Here's the link to leave a comment:

Id have to say i was really bummed about carnivale getting cancelled. Thought that could of gone on alot longer.
Besides that, freaks and greaks, arrested development, and teen angel.
Wonderfalls. I really should've learned my lesson after Firefly that Fox puts the good shows on Friday night and abuses it.
But Wonderfalls was wonderfully snarky and funny and still managed to be endearing.
Shows that were canceled before their time: Firefly, Dresden Files, and Jericho come to mind right away.
All of these were severely mishandled by the networks. If they had started with the original pilot for The Dresden Files, it would have had a much stronger start and a stronger following.
The show Freaks and Geeks...that show should have stayed on more than one season, damn it.
I'm still the most disappointed by the cancellation of Firefly. But there are so many others - Pushing Daisies, Terminator:TSCC, Dresden Files... I agree with the bulk of the previous comments...
Firefly was definitely cancelled before its time. Fox fuh'tup. But it's not even the first time.
Brisco County Junior only had two seasons. I've only watched a couple episodes of it, but it was a great show, and Bruce really deserved a success. Thankfully he's got one now in a supporting role (but at least a major one) in Burn Notice. (Hope that doesn't get cancelled too. :P)
Hi, everyone, and thanks for all the mentions of great, forgotten series.
Chris, "Brisco County Jr." was really an hilarious steam-punk series with one of my favorite actors, Bruce Campbell.
The winner of the contest is...go to my blog post today to see!
Dead like me.
They just left the story hanging there.
inb4 obligatory firefly.
Dresden and Firefly....definitely and the Middlemen. All really good.
